One person is in custody after a chase with police in Van Buren County on Tuesday.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy on patrol spotted a vehicle commit several traffic violations in Geneva Township around 3:30 p.m.
When the deputy went to pull the vehicle over, it sped off. A chase then followed, taking the suspect and deputy from County Road 681, west on 16th Avenue, and finally to the intersection at 60th Street. That’s where the fleeing driver lost control and crashed into a ditch. He tried to run from the vehicle, but was caught a few hundred yards away, partly thanks to a police K9.
The sheriff’s department says it’s believed the suspect was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was first checked out at a hospital and then taken to the Van Buren County Jail.
The suspect’s name has not been released.
